One of the most impressive places I’ve been to in Spain. You need to book your visit in advance, because entering the cave is allowed only with a guide.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The cave art may not be spectacular but it is thought provoking looking a paintings over 20000 years old. We had a great guide who spoke excellent English and was very knowledgeable.
Impressive to see 20000 years old drawings. Huge cave with nice guide. Real drawings on the wall. Already an adventure to get to the cave. Worth the effort.
Closed today.....but managed to get some pix from outside the Steel gates. Thought about jumping over- but didn’t. I’ll buy the book.
Already visited El Castillo and Monedas yesterday. ALTAMIRA manana
It was an interesting trip to this cave. There's plenty of caves around this area, by the way, but only this cave has neanderthal paintings on the rock
The ticket is €5 ...
Very interesting place, good guided tour
Cool cave though very few available tickets due to covid restrictions. Highly recommend booking in advance
In the heart of the Camargo valley, near the village of Escobedo we find one of many caves in Cantabria. This cave is not suitable for very young children or physically disabled persons. Access is via a cobblestone path which descends a couple of hundred metres into the valley where the opening of the cave is found. Small groups of a maximum of 12 or so people are permitted access accompanied by a guide. Not as rich in the number of paintings as Altamira but namely more important because the 25m painting frieze was executed in a with amazing skill at the bottom of the cave. It is difficult to determine with any precision the age, would seem to be in an ancient period, around 20,000 B.C.
They are currently continuing to excavate with extraordinary results. This site is rich in archaeological finds, many of which have revealed and shed light upon our distant ancestors.
You are advised to book in advance and to take some warm clothing with you as the temperature inside of the cave is about 9 degrees centigrade.
